Laboratory Officer

Laboratory Officer

Location: Port Harcourt

Role Purpose

The DCF (Drilling Completion Fluids) and Production Chemicals Laboratory Officer is the primary guardian of product quality at the Liquid Mud Plant. This role performs comprehensive chemical, physical, and analytical testing on drilling fluids, completion fluids, and production chemicals to guarantee product specifications, drive zero cost of poor quality, and enforce operations integrity through detailed data analysis, technical guidance, and strict quality assurance protocols.

 Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and specialized laboratory testing on drilling fluids, completion fluids, and production chemicals in accordance with API standards and client specifications.
  • Collect chemical and fluid samples systematically across all mixing, storage, receiving, and dispatch stages at the LMP.
  • Analyze fluid property trends, viscosity, filtration control, brine density, and turbidity to detect potential contaminants or quality deviations early.
  • Provide precise technical recommendations and chemical treatment guidelines to LMP Supervisors and Operators to optimize fluid mixing.
  • Maintain health, safety, and environmental (HSE) standards within the laboratory, including proper chemical handling, storage, and hazardous waste disposal.
  • Drive asset preservation and accuracy by calibrating, maintaining, and certifying laboratory test instruments and analytical equipment.
  • Generate timely, precise quality assurance certificates and test reports to support micro LMP service level agreements and client delivery sign-offs.
  • Uphold zero non-compliance with corporate laboratory policies, environmental laws, and customer quality mandates.
  • Ensure zero cost of poor quality by preventing off-spec fluids from leaving the facility.
  • Collaborate effectively with operational, technical, and service delivery teams, exhibiting strong teamwork, ownership, and adaptability.

Education & Work Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Chemistry, or a related scientific field.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of practical laboratory testing experience focusing on drilling/completion fluids and production chemicals.

 Competency & Skill Requirements

  • Expertise in API fluid testing methods, laboratory equipment calibration, and chemical property analysis.
  • High analytical capability, methodical attention to detail, and data-driven problem-solving skills.
  • Deep understanding of quality control frameworks and zero cost of poor quality principles.
  • Excellent communication skills to articulate technical fluid data to field and management personnel.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Zero Cost of Poor Quality:Zero client fluid rejections or quality non-conformance reports due to laboratory testing errors.
  • Zero Non-Compliance:100% compliance with laboratory HSE, chemical safety data sheet (SDS) guidelines, and disposal laws.
  • Operations Integrity:100% on-time generation and distribution of fluid analysis reports and batch release certifications.
  • Asset Integrity:100% compliance with laboratory instrument calibration schedules.
